Celebrating 100 Sales: My E-Commerce Journey and Lessons Learned
Embarking on an entrepreneurial journey at a young age is both challenging and rewarding. Over the past year, I have experienced significant growth and learned invaluable lessons in the world of online business. Today, I want to share my story—covering my early setbacks, pivotal milestones, and the insights that have propelled me forward.
Who Am I?
I’m a 17-year-old high school senior with a strong interest in building my own financial independence through e-commerce. My path has been filled with experimentation, mistakes, and perseverance, but each step has brought me closer to understanding what works and what doesn’t.
Early Ventures: Stock Trading and Cryptocurrency
My first foray into investing involved my father and me pooling $250 each into an eToro account to trade stocks—totaling $500. We invested in Ripple (XRP) and experienced a promising near $1,000 profit before the market crash led to a $300 loss. This initial attempt taught me an important lesson: investing without proper knowledge can be risky and costly.
Diving into Dropshipping
At 16, I decided to explore dropshipping—an online retail model that involves selling products without holding inventory. Looking back at my first store, I recognize how much I lacked experience. My early store was far from professional, and the feedback I received was blunt but honest. I lost around $200 on that venture, mostly due to not understanding the intricacies of customer trust, product selection, and marketing.
Despite these setbacks, I kept learning and improving.
Transitioning to Print on Demand (POD)
By age 17, with around $200 in my bank and having faced setbacks in part-time jobs, I turned my focus to print on demand (POD) merchandise. A friend introduced me to Teespring, a platform that simplifies designing and selling custom apparel. I chose a niche I was passionate about—the meme culture—and created my first T-shirt.
A modest $5 ad spend on Instagram led to my first sale within hours, igniting a renewed sense of confidence. As I continued promoting, I reached an exciting milestone: my 100th sale.
Reflecting on Progress
Moving onto Shopify, I faced new challenges, but I maintained my primary store on Teespring, aiming to generate passive income. Interestingly, I also encountered a “copycat” competitor—an experience I took as a compliment since it validated the demand for my designs.
Key Lessons and Advice
Throughout this journey, several principles have emerged that I believe are essential for anyone starting in e-commerce:
-
Stay Humble and Accept Mistakes: No one starts as an expert. Acknowledge when you don’t know something, and learn from every setback.
-
Avoid the “Get Rich Quick” Mindset: Sustainable success takes time, effort, and persistence. Be prepared to fight through challenges and setbacks.
-
Take Risks and Embrace Failure: Growth often comes from taking calculated risks and facing failures head-on.
-
Manage Expectations: While milestones like 100 sales are exciting, they are just a part of a long-term journey. Keep pushing forward.
Looking Ahead
While I still have a long way to go, reaching this milestone has been incredibly motivating. I invite anyone interested in starting their own e-commerce venture to ask questions—I’m happy to share more insights and tips.

Final Thoughts
Remember, making mistakes is part of the learning process. Success in e-commerce isn’t about avoiding failure but about learning from it and persevering. Stay committed, keep experimenting, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.
Wishing you all the best in your ventures!
